Yankee District 2009 Consulting Rosarian School

(PDF format here)

Consulting Rosarians are those members in good standing of the American Rose Society who have met all the prerequisites, attended an Accreditation School, and subsequently passed the Consulting Rosarian written examination. Consulting Rosarians are personnel who can answer the rose growing questions of others and who are pro-active in the community for promoting quality rose-growing by others.

CR Schools are attended by previously-certified CR’s in order to maintain current knowledge and certification.

Such CR Schools are organized and presented by ARS Districts periodically- and this is once every three (3) years in Yankee District.  The coordinator for the 2009 CR School is David Candler, Yankee District Consulting Rosarian Chair.  The date is April 26, 2009.

The Prerequisites for becoming a CR are found on the ARS Web Site, www.ars.org, and are presented as part of Enclosure (1): How to Become a Consulting Rosarian.

Who should attend?

Those completing their CR quest to be refreshed with the Consulting Rosarian Principals and will take the Examination immediately following the day-long school. The Examination is Open Book (using the Consulting Rosarian Manual).  Exams will be graded immediately following the exam.

Current Consulting Rosarians in order to maintain CR certification.  Those that are current need not take the Exam.  Those who were once certified, but Certification has lapsed due to not having earned Continuing Education Credits (4 points in 4 years), must take the exam again.

Those who are not in the above categories, but are Visitors may Monitor the course.  These folks must still pay their share of the fees (except for the Certification Examination Fee), and may not take the examination.

What are the costs involved?

There is a $25 fee for the course, and this includes a light lunch and coffee break.

There is a $10 ARS fee for those who will be taking the Examination for Certification.

What is the School Subject Matter, and How Do I Prepare?

All material to be covered is in the American Rose Society Consulting Rosarian Manual, which should be purchased separately from ARS, and studied in advance.  The School is intended as a Refresher, not a complete immersion of all portions of the Manual.  The Examination will cover the text portion of the CR Manual, and will be broad in scope (as befitting a National Certification). Local characteristics of rose growing are not part of the Certification, although certainly a CR’s advice to others will logically be locally-tailored.

How do I “Sign Up”?

Attendees should send the following forms and information to the Yankee District Consulting Rosarian Chair no later than 15 March 2009 (new CR’s) or 5 April (for Current CR’s and those ‘visitors’ monitoring the course):

1.       CR School Application (all attendees)- see Enclosure 2: CR School Application

2.       Three (3) Letters of Recommendation (from current CR’s vouching for your abilities to serve as a responsible and knowledgeable CR (only required for New Consulting Rosarian Applicants)- see Enclosure 3: Letter of Recommendation (make your copies).

3.       New Consulting Rosarian Candidate Form (New CR Applicants only).

4.       Check to cover the School Fees (see Costs Involved above, thus the check will be for $35 or $25).  Checks should be made out to “ARS Yankee District”.

5.       Let the YD Chair know if there is a need for Special Meal Accommodations in advance.

How to Become a Consulting Rosarian

Consulting Rosarian is a title held by those persons who have met the requirements of length of membership in the ARS; have met the pre-requisites of service, experience and attitude; and have attended the ARS District course and passed the examination following the course of instruction.

The CR courses are generally held every three years and are sponsored by each District (Yankee District in our case) and the next will be on 26 April 2009.  That school will be presented at the Pond House, Elizabeth Park, West Hartford, CT.  Specific information and sign-up forms will be posted on the Yankee District and CT Rose Society web sites in December 2008.  A nominal cost will be assessed to conduct the school, and box lunches will be available at reasonable cost.

Full information on Consulting Rosarian qualification is available at the ARS website at: http://ars.org/pdf/CR-Resume-form.pdf.

You may attend the course at another District and take the test there, as the designation is ARS-sponsored. Schedule of coming schools in the various ARS Districts can be found at: http://ars.org/Coming_Events/consulting_school.html.
These are also published in The American Rose magazine in the schedule of events near the back of most issues.

Here are some of the Prerequisites to consider well in advance, as some require preparation:

You need to have been an ARS Member for the last three consecutive years. So don't forget to renew your annual membership!  This should be an individual membership (using your name, not an ‘associate’ membership where your spouse is the Member).
You should be a Rosarian in Good Standing in your local Society. That means helpful to others in matters of rose culture, and generous with your volunteering in the local Society events. For example participating in the annual Rose Show is creditable. Participation or presentation of local Society programs and writing articles (for the newsletter or website) are great ways to become involved. The CR Application Form asks for lists of such voluntary participation.
You must be willing to actively participate in teaching rose culture to others after you have been appointed. This means willing to return telephone calls or respond by email to questions from new rosarians.
You will need three letters of recommendation from other Consulting Rosarians. It is useful to convince them that you are worthy as you go and grow along.
You will need to purchase a "Consulting Rosarian's Manual" from the ARS. From reading that, learning at Society presentations, and attending the District-Sponsored course you will learn the manual. The Manual is available for purchase at the ARS Website. It is WELL WORTH owning even if you have no intention of becoming a CR. It will answer your rose culture questions!
You must pass the CR Manual written exam given immediately following the CR Review Course (Sunday, 26 April 2009, in Yankee District’s case).

This procedure is really not difficult, but does require some advance planning and preparation. Welcome Aboard!
